Home Cleaning Tips

Science-backed, practical advice for cleaner, healthier Indian homes — covering every room, every season.

Daily Habits

5 tips

Wipe kitchen surfaces after every meal

Food residue left on countertops for even a few hours creates an ideal breeding ground for E. coli and Salmonella. A quick wipe with a damp cloth + all-purpose cleaner after cooking keeps bacterial load at near zero.

Pro tip: Use two cloths — one for raw food surfaces, one for cooked. Cross-contamination is a leading cause of food poisoning at home.

Rinse dishes within 30 minutes of eating

Starches and proteins in food harden as they dry, making grease-cutting far harder. Rinsing immediately means your dish wash liquid works at 20–30% lower concentration, saving product and water.

Squeegee bathroom tiles after every shower

Standing moisture is the primary driver of black mould (Cladosporium) on grout and caulk. A 30-second squeegee after every shower reduces tile-surface moisture by over 75%, drastically slowing mould growth.

Pro tip: Leave the bathroom door open for 15 minutes post-shower. Warm humid air trapped in a closed room elevates humidity to 90%+ — ideal for mould.

Declutter surfaces before you clean

Items sitting on counters and shelves accumulate their own dust and trap moisture underneath. Moving objects before wiping ensures you clean the surface fully, not just around obstacles.

Empty kitchen dustbins daily

Kitchen waste containing food scraps degrades rapidly in Indian ambient temperatures (25–35°C). Within 24 hours, organic waste starts emitting ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases and attracting pests. Daily disposal is non-negotiable in warm climates.

Kitchen

6 tips

Degrease the stovetop weekly, not just when visibly dirty

Cooking oils undergo oxidation and polymerisation on hot surfaces, forming hard varnish-like deposits over time. Once polymerised, grease cannot be removed by dish wash liquid alone — you need an alkaline degreaser. Weekly cleaning prevents this from ever happening.

Pro tip: Apply degreaser and let it sit for 3–5 minutes before wiping. The dwell time is where the chemistry does the work, not the scrubbing.

Disinfect your kitchen sponge every 2 days

A damp kitchen sponge contains more bacteria per square centimetre than a toilet seat — up to 10 billion CFU. Microwave a damp sponge for 90 seconds or soak in diluted bleach solution (1 tsp bleach per litre) to kill 99.9% of bacteria. Replace every 2 weeks.

Clean refrigerator door seals monthly

The rubber gaskets around fridge doors are frequently overlooked and develop mould within weeks if left uncleaned. Use a toothbrush with diluted dish wash liquid to scrub the folds. A dirty seal also reduces the fridge's thermal efficiency, increasing your electricity bill.

Descale taps and sinks if you have hard water

Most Indian municipal water has high TDS (total dissolved solids). Calcium and magnesium deposits (limescale) build up on tap aerators and sink surfaces, restricting flow and looking stained. Soak affected areas with diluted white vinegar for 20 minutes monthly to dissolve mineral deposits without harsh chemicals.

Pro tip: Do not use vinegar on natural stone (marble, granite). The acid etches the surface. Use a pH-neutral descaler instead.

Clean under and behind the refrigerator annually

Condenser coils at the back or bottom of your refrigerator collect dust, reducing cooling efficiency by up to 25%. Vacuum or brush coils annually. Accumulated grease and food debris under the fridge also harbours cockroaches and rodents.

Wipe the inside of your microwave with steam first

Place a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Run on high for 5 minutes. The steam loosens dried food splatter, making it wipe off effortlessly without scrubbing or harsh chemicals.

Bathroom

5 tips

Disinfect the toilet bowl twice a week — especially under the rim

The underside of the toilet rim is a dead zone for light and ventilation, making it the densest site for bacteria and mould in the bathroom. Apply toilet cleaner under the rim, let it sit for 10 minutes (not just flush through), then scrub with a brush. The dwell time matters far more than the brand.

Pro tip: After cleaning, pour 100ml of floor cleaner down floor drains too. Standing water in traps is a significant source of bathroom odour and insect breeding.

Bleach tile grout monthly to prevent permanent staining

Grout is porous and absorbs soap scum, mineral deposits, and mould spores continuously. Surface mould can be scrubbed off; deeply embedded staining requires professional regrouting. A monthly diluted bleach or bathroom cleaner treatment keeps grout light and prevents deep penetration.

Clean showerheads quarterly

Showerhead nozzles accumulate mineral deposits that reduce spray coverage and, critically, biofilm that can harbour Legionella bacteria — the cause of Legionnaires' disease. Remove the showerhead and soak in white vinegar for 2–4 hours quarterly. The nozzles should visibly clear and spray improve.

Disinfect toothbrush holders weekly

Studies consistently find toothbrush holders among the top 3 germiest items in a home, harbouring coliform bacteria (originating from toilet flush aerosolisation). Wash with hot soapy water weekly and keep toothbrushes at least 2 metres from the toilet.

Run the exhaust fan during and 15 minutes after showering

A bathroom without active ventilation during showers reaches 90–95% relative humidity — well above the 70% threshold where Aspergillus and Cladosporium moulds begin rapid colonisation. Running the fan removes humid air before it condenses on cold walls and ceilings.

Floors

5 tips

Always sweep or vacuum before mopping

Wet mopping over dry dust and hair creates a paste that smears across the floor rather than removing dirt. It also wears mop fibres faster. Two minutes of sweeping before every mop session produces dramatically better results and a longer-lasting clean.

Dilute floor cleaner exactly per instructions

Using more floor cleaner than recommended leaves a chemical residue that acts as a dust magnet — floors appear to get dirty faster after cleaning. The correct dilution ratio is formulated to leave no residue at the target concentration. More product is not more clean.

Pro tip: For high-traffic areas, increase mop frequency rather than chemical concentration. Two passes with correctly diluted cleaner outperform one pass with double concentration.

Mop from the farthest corner towards the door

Mopping toward you means walking over the wet area you just cleaned, re-depositing dirt and leaving footprints. Starting at the far end of a room and mopping your way out is a basic professional technique that keeps floors pristine.

Dry floors quickly after mopping in monsoon months

A wet floor in a humid room can take 30–60 minutes to dry naturally, during which mould spores in the air settle and begin germination. Run a ceiling fan after mopping to accelerate drying. In monsoon season, adding a few drops of phenyl or disinfectant to mop water provides residual antimicrobial action as the floor dries.

Clean under furniture at least once a month

Dust mites — the primary trigger of dust allergy and asthma — thrive in the undisturbed debris that accumulates under beds, sofas, and wardrobes. Regular cleaning of these zones, combined with washing bedding in hot water monthly, significantly reduces allergen load in the home.

Glass & Windows

3 tips

Clean glass on overcast days, never in direct sunlight

Direct sunlight heats the glass surface and causes liquid cleaner to evaporate before it can be wiped, leaving concentrated mineral deposits and streaks that are difficult to remove. Cloudy conditions or early morning give you working time to spread, loosen, and wipe properly.

Use horizontal strokes on one side, vertical on the other

This is a professional glazier's technique. If streaks appear after cleaning, the stroke direction tells you which side of the glass they're on. Horizontal streaks visible from inside = inside surface. Vertical streaks visible from inside = outside surface. Eliminates guesswork.

Pro tip: Microfiber cloths are significantly more effective than newspaper (which leaves ink residue) or paper towels (which shed fibres). A clean, dry microfiber cloth for the final buff makes the biggest difference.

Clean window tracks and frames before the glass

Dust and grime from dirty tracks gets dragged onto the glass surface as windows slide open and closed. Clean the tracks with a narrow brush and vacuum first, then clean the glass. Doing it in reverse order means you re-contaminate what you just cleaned.

Monsoon Care

4 tips

Increase mopping frequency to daily during monsoon

Wet footprints and rain water tracked indoors carry soil, fungal spores, and bacteria. In peak monsoon (June–September), daily mopping with a disinfectant floor cleaner in entrance areas and kitchens is the standard in hygiene-conscious Indian households.

Inspect corners and wall-floor junctions for early mould signs

Early-stage mould appears as dark grey or greenish speckling in corners and around window frames. At this stage, wiping with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) kills spores before they root into the wall. Untreated for 2–3 weeks, mould penetrates porous plaster and requires professional remediation.

Pro tip: Wear gloves when handling bleach solutions. Never mix bleach with any acid-based cleaner — it produces toxic chlorine gas.

Air mattresses and upholstery during the first dry sunny days post-monsoon

Mattresses, pillows, and sofa cushions absorb ambient humidity continuously during monsoon, creating interiors with high moisture content. Dust mites and mould flourish in this environment. The first sustained sunny days after monsoon are the best opportunity to air and sun-dry all bedding and cushions.

Clean ceiling fans and AC filters before summer begins

Ceiling fans accumulate months of greasy dust on blade surfaces through the winter. When first switched on in summer at high speed, this dust is thrown into the room as fine particles. Wipe fan blades before switching on for the season. AC filters clogged with dust reduce airflow and efficiency by 15–25% and circulate dust mites and allergens.

Safety & Eco

5 tips

Never mix bleach with any other cleaning product

Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) mixed with ammonia (found in many glass cleaners) produces chloramine gases. Mixed with acids (vinegar, toilet bowl cleaners), it produces chlorine gas. Both reactions can cause respiratory damage within minutes in an enclosed space. Use bleach alone, diluted in water only.

Respect dilution ratios — concentrated does not mean cleaner

All Bharat Bliss products are formulated to work at specific concentrations. Undiluted use of concentrated products does not improve cleaning performance and can damage surfaces, irritate skin, and is wasteful. Read the label and dilute accordingly.

Ventilate rooms when using any cleaning spray

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in cleaning products accumulate rapidly in small, unventilated spaces. Open windows and doors before spraying any bathroom or kitchen cleaner. The ventilation requirement is printed on all product labels and is not optional, especially in rooms with poor natural airflow like Indian bathrooms.

Store all cleaning products in original containers

Transferring cleaning products into unmarked or food containers is a leading cause of accidental poisoning, particularly in children. Original containers carry dilution instructions, first aid guidance, and hazard labelling. Never repurpose water bottles or food containers for chemical storage.

Choose biodegradable formulas where possible

Phosphate-heavy and petroleum-derived cleaning chemicals persist in water bodies and soil, contributing to algal blooms and aquatic toxicity. Plant-based, biodegradable formulas break down to non-toxic compounds within days after going down the drain. Choosing them makes a measurable difference at scale across millions of Indian households.
